Reading Raphael: The School of Athens and Its Pretext / Glenn W. Most. Turin: Einaudi, c. 2001

In 1510, Raphael frescoed the so-called "School of Athens" on a wall of the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican. This work has influenced the last five centuries of our culture, engaging eminent scholars and art critics in repeated but unsatisfactory attempts at interpretation. Glenn Most, with a surprising and historically sound argument, has concluded that the source of this marvelous fresco lies in a passage from Plato's "Protagoras," in which we find the same interpretative elements and the same grandeur. The author, however, is convinced that the "School of Athens" is something far more than a simple pictorial transposition of Plato's text, and through a precise and brilliant analysis, he discovers in the fresco complex and erudite references to the Neoplatonic philosophy of the time, as well as insistent references to Etruscan elements, in keeping with the prevailing taste of the time. These details allow for a new and more complete reading of Raphael's work and push us to question the interpretative limits of such an investigation and the possibility of applying it to other paintings.
