Anyone who works with books treads paths between words and images, and, like a careful gardener, plows rough terrain, sows, waters, nourishes, and tends. The right book in the right place is like a seed capable, over time, of building lush gardens where one can lose oneself and find oneself again. The librarian, like the good gardener, needs a toolbox to work with a profound gaze among books.
To guide both adults and children in their bibliographic choices, the librarian needs knowledge of literature and its transformations, publishing and quality indicators, communication codes and the visual grammar of children's books. The ability to explore and offer appropriate reading therefore requires ongoing training in the visual arts, a precise and clear understanding of childhood, and reliable criteria for sparking readers' interest. Being a conscious librarian means becoming an activator of experiences, a multiplier of stories. Earth and roots of flowers and trees. Multimedia and self-directed learning is envisioned, along with experimentation with simulation techniques, analysis, and the development of models that can be replicated in individual professional settings. It will be a combination of reading aloud and workshops for constructing artistic paths through experimentation with paper and printing techniques. The strategies tested will be easily reproducible in formal and non-formal contexts for collective narrative projects. Based on a bibliography compiled with participants, the workshop aims to propose book-making workshops to create a small collection of handmade book/maps. Specifically, we will experiment with the construction of pocket-sized paper maps, using Munari's folding and cutting techniques and basic stitching. Each map will be associated with a book or group of books based on specific common denominators. Just as plants in a garden are positioned in a specific corner, books require special displays or groupings to be appreciated and loved.
The workshop includes:
- Construction of a bibliography in relation to the specific availability of the reference library and the target of potential users of the service.
- Exploration and cataloging of the materials needed for the construction of the books/maps;
- Practical book-making experiments with folds, cuts, and basic bindings.
- Analogue and digital strategies to enable map reading even during lockdowns
