A splendid sacred architecture, a harmonious blend of styles, stands in the historic center of Villacidro. It is a balanced juxtaposition of architectural forms and a wonderful example of how sacred art, even on the island, adapted to the dictates of the Counter-Reformation. Of the original sixteenth-century structure, the sumptuous capilla mayor (presbytery) with its ribbed star-shaped vault remains, the only element not affected by the renovation commissioned in 1670 by the Genoese architect Domenico Spotorno, the same architect who carried out Baroque interventions on the Cagliari Cathedral and the Basilica of San Pietro in Ales.
