San Gavino Monreale Municipal Library

The history of the library

The municipal library of San Gavino Monreale, originally housed from 1979 to 1998 on the ground floor of the former town hall in Piazza Marconi, was moved in August 1998 to new, larger premises in the buildings on Via Leonardo da Vinci, built around the 1930s as homes for the managers of the nearby foundry.

The new building, surrounded by a small but beautiful park of pine and palm trees, is the ideal place for those who want to immerse themselves in reading or dedicate themselves to their studies with due concentration. The library's barrier-free entrances on Via Leonardo da Vinci allow easy access, even for those with disabilities.

The interior comprises a spacious space of approximately 300 square meters, furnished in typical Northern European library style, divided into ten different areas. It is an open-shelf library for public reading, with materials covering all disciplines; its book collection totals approximately 30315 volumes. The precious manuscripts of musical compositions, donated to the municipality of San Gavino Monreale by Father Antonino Orrù, are carefully preserved. In addition to the usual book lending service, the library offers its users the opportunity to use multimedia tools, such as free Internet access, CD-ROM viewing, and the use of computers for word processing.
